Pass Story: Cheryl Passes After 24 Years

Practical test

Nothing quite beats the feeling of passing your driving test. All the hard work has paid off and you can finally enjoy the freedom of the open road. Imagine just how sweet it would feel if it had taken 24 years to get your hands on that all-important pink card. Well, that’s exactly what happened with PassMeFast student Cheryl!

It’s been a bit of a rocky road, but Cheryl has now cast off the L-plates and is enjoying life as a qualified driver. Knowing that you should never give up, this one-of-a-kind learner is the epitome of the phrase ‘if at first you don’t succeed…’—take it from the woman herself:

“I first learnt to drive 24 years [ago] but gave up; I tried again 7 years ago and gave up again; then I found PassMeFast and thought I’d give them a go—I’m so glad I did.”

And PassMeFast is so glad she did too! We’re thrilled to be part of her amazing story and this is a driving journey that can offer some great lessons for learners of all ages…

Find What Works For You

Even though it’s a fairly straightforward process, there are a few tweaks you can make to fit the driving experience to your personal preferences. One of the first decisions to make is whether you fancy driving a manual or an automatic. For Cheryl, it was ditching the gear stick that made all the difference:

“After my first 5 hours I realised I made a big mistake—the manual car was clearly not for me. I (…) got the rest of my 20 hours booked into an automatic; it’s the best thing I did.”

While passing in a manual car will make you a master of clutch control and give you the option to drive both kinds of vehicle in the future, the learning process can be trickier. Opting for an automatic car means you can skip the lessons on gear changes, so it’s possible you could be test ready in a shorter space of time.

As you can see, both options have their pros and cons. It’s about finding which works best for you.

Find Who Works For You

While learning to drive is often seen as a personal journey, you’re unlikely to get far without a great instructor. Depending on your personality and driving ability, different temperaments and approaches can make for the optimum learning experience.

Our ADI Chris was the one to help Cheryl get back in the driving seat. She liked the fact that he was “very patient and had faith in me”—qualities that can really help learners overcome nerves and become confident drivers.

The Big Day

Clipboard with a checklist

Once she had the right car and instructor, Cheryl was soon well on her way to passing her test. In fact, it wasn’t long before we received some very exciting news:

“I passed my test this morning with 2 minors, and at the age of 49 now have my licence.”

That’s not just a pass, that’s a pass with flying colours! Congratulations Cheryl! We couldn’t be more proud and we hope you enjoy the convenience, freedom and memorable road trips that a driving licence is sure to bring.
