Where better to begin our trip around the driving test centres of Leicestershire than in the town of Hinckley? The third-largest settlement in the county, it’s home to the UK’s largest manufacturer of motorcycles, Triumph, as well as supercar firm Ultima Sports. There’s certainly some motoring pedigree in the area, then—but will the Hinckley practical test centre reflect this?

Let’s start with the stats. This was one of the less frequented Leicestershire test centres in 2019/20, with only 2,851 tests taking place here. Of these, 1,308 learners passed, giving Hinckley an overall pass rate of 45.9%. On paper, this figure may not sound stellar, but it’s actually exactly the same as the national average. This emphasises the reality that your test result comes down to you, and not the stats!

This test centre is slightly unusual, being located in a residential part of town. Right from the off, you’ll need to think about positioning and priority rules on car-lined streets. You’re still close to the town centre, though, so a trip here is certainly on the cards. Your examiner may ask you to head to the nearby A5, but, as motorway driving is not part of the test, the M69 won’t feature.

Hinckley is the test centre for you if you live in south-west Leicestershire. This includes Hinckley itself as well as Burbage, Barwell, Market Bosworth and Earl Shilton. It also serves as a convenient backup for those in the Nuneaton, Bedworth and Atherstone areas.

2019/20 pass rate 40.8%

As one of the UK’s largest urban areas, Leicester couldn’t just have one test centre. To better serve the city, there are two locations at which you can take your driving test: one to the north, and one to the south. We’re starting at the northern end of Leicester as we visit the Cannock Street practical test centre.

The name ‘Cannock Street’ may not mean much to you even if you’re a local. And that makes sense: far from being a major thoroughfare, Cannock Street is instead home to part of the Troon Industrial Estate. If you need help finding it, it’s found on the edge of the Thurmaston area, and is just outside the Leicester ring road.

Cannock Street’s location makes it the perfect choice for those living in areas to the north of Leicester, like Birstall, Thurmaston, Belgrave and Humberstone. In fact, test routes here are likely to focus on these areas, meaning that you should have a real home advantage. It also just beats out Wigston as the closest test centre to the city centre itself, though test routes generally don’t travel here.

Now, brace yourself: we’ve come to the statistics. First off, the negatives: with a pass rate of 40.8%, Cannock Street had the worst record of any Leicestershire test centre. However, it’s worth remembering that urban areas generally have lower pass rates—and that this is only a smidge below the national average of 45.9%. Out of 10,073 tests, there were 4,110 passes here, so getting your licence certainly isn’t impossible!

Leicester (Wigston)

Address Tigers Road, off Saffron Road
South Wigston
LE18 4WS

Parking? Yes
Toilets? Yes; male, female and disabled
Disabled access? You can get into the test centre in a wheelchair
2019/20 pass rate 41.9%

The more southerly of the two Leicester test centres can be found in the Wigston area. It also boasts one of the coolest street names of any test centre, lying on Tigers Road. Don’t get confused, though: we’re nowhere near the Leicester Tigers ground! Instead, the Wigston practical test centre lies three miles to the south of the city centre.

Wigston’s location makes it the obvious choice for any learners from south Leicester. This includes areas such as Aylestone and Braunstone Town, as well as more outlying towns such as Blaby, Oadby, Narborough and Enderby. It’s even the best option for some areas on the other side of the city, such as Leicester Forest East. Your instructor will know which is the closest choice to your address, so be sure to quiz them!

One factor you may take into account when deciding between the two Leicester test centres is pass rates. If that’s the case, then you may be pleased to learn that, in recent years, Wigston has generally had the better pass rate of the two. However, the gap in 2019/20 was small, at just over 1%. This was Leicestershire’s most popular test centre in the same year, with 12,070 tests taken and 5,055 students passing.

Test routes here tend to stick to the areas of Wigston, South Wigston, Aylestone and Glen Parva. This small area includes exactly the kind of mix of residential streets and A roads that the DVSA look for. Our top tip: practise on the Windley Road and Pork Pie Roundabouts!

Toilets? Yes; male and female
Disabled access? No information
2019/20 pass rate 49.7%

It’s now the turn of the biggest town in Leicestershire to step into the spotlight. Loughborough is perhaps best known for the sporting associations of its university, which even developed the match ball for the 2010 World Cup. Today, though, we’re not focusing on the pitch, but on the road, as we review the Loughborough practical test centre.

The Loughborough test centre is located, as is so often the case, in a business park. This can conjure up thoughts of having to travel to parts unknown miles away from home. Let us allay those fears: the test centre itself lies just 5 minutes away from the town centre, and 2 minutes from the Loughborough train station. Just turn off from Meadow Lane onto Station Boulevard, take a right onto Gordon Road, and you’re there! Piece of cake.

Thinking about your test route? As always, your examiner will decide on the day, and with no official routes published, knowing exactly where you’ll need to drive in advance is impossible. However, be aware that virtually any part of Loughborough could crop up, as well as nearby villages such as Cotes.

Loughborough serves as the test centre of choice for most of northern Leicestershire, including nearby towns like Shepshed, Barrow-upon-Soar and Quorn. It’s even the best option for areas as far afield as Coalville. Pass rate figures here are encouraging: out of 5,193 tests taken here in 2019/20, there were 2,580 passes. That represents a pass rate of 49.7%, four points above the national average.

Melton Mowbray

Address Phoenix House
Nottingham Road
Melton Mowbray
LE13 0UL

Parking? Yes
Toilets? Only staff toilets; candidates should use the facilities in the nearby supermarket
Disabled access? No information
2019/20 pass rate 58.6%

Normally, when introducing the final centre in a roundup, it’s tempting to say “last, but not least”. Here, it’s not quite accurate, as Melton Mowbray saw the fewest tests of any Leicestershire test centre in 2019/20, with only 1,960 taking place. Perhaps a better saying to apply here, then, is “save the best for last”. That’s because the centre has a stunning pass rate of 58.6%!

You may not guess at the centre’s high pass rate just from looking at its location, though. You can find it just across the car park from a large Sainsbury’s supermarket. It’s so close, in fact, that candidates are advised to use toilet facilities here, as the test centre has none for candidates. The test centre does, however, have its own car park, meaning you won’t have to compete with shoppers if asked to complete a bay parking manoeuvre!

Another important thing to note is that the Melton Mowbray practical test centre is found just off the A606. This busy A road is the main artery running through the town, and is likely to appear on most test routes starting here. You should also prepare for your examiner to direct you towards nearby villages like Welby and Asfordby Hill.

This test centre has perhaps the smallest catchment area of any in the county. Indeed, aside from Melton itself, it covers only a handful of villages in Leicestershire. However, it also serves as the closest option for the neighbouring county of Rutland, which doesn’t have a test centre of its own.
