Driving is one of the best forms of escapism and nothing enhances a car journey like a killer playlist. Whether you like to belt it out behind the wheel, or let the music transport you to another place, there’s a perfect track out there for you! In this guide, we’ve rounded up our top ten driving songs to blast next time you hit the road. Have a gander and see if you agree—other recommendations are welcome in the comments section!

10. Whitesnake — Here I Go Again

No driving playlist would be complete without a rock anthem or two, so we’re kicking things off with a hair metal masterpiece. This Whitesnake classic is an ideal accompaniment to any journey because it really emphasises that sense of independence that driving provides. It’s just you, the car and the open road, baby… OK, maybe you’re also joined by another car (or 50), but ignore them and channel your inner rock god! Leather pants and shaggy barnet optional.

9. Rihanna — Shut Up and Drive

Packed with risqué innuendos and set to a catchy pop beat, this hit from Rihanna is sure to fill your drive with positive vibes. Trying to swerve a bad driver or struggling with a case of road rage? Just ask yourself, “What would RiRi do?”  Hmm, on second thoughts, that’s probably not a great idea—the Barbadian goddess can probably get away with a lot more than you. Instead, simply do as she says: shut up and drive!

8. Tina Turner — River Deep, Mountain High

In at number 8 we have this belter of a tune from the Queen of Rock and Roll herself, Tina Turner. If you’ve got a good set of lungs on you, be sure to do this one justice! Feel your mood lift as the chorus reaches its crescendo and allow yourself to come over all romantic. Whether you’re thinking of that someone special, or even your trusty little motor, you’re sure to have a splendid drive if this is the soundtrack!

7. Blur — Song 2

PassMeFast started in Manchester, so it feels almost sacrilegious to include Blur on this list and not Oasis. Nevertheless, we can’t avoid the fact that the boys from the south made a perfect driving tune. Song 2 will make you feel alert, energised and ready to rack up the miles. It’s perfect for journeys that involve cruising around bends or zooming along wide-open, rural land. Please remember that the road is not your personal racetrack—even though this song can make it feel like it is!

6. Arcade Fire — Keep The Car Running

For number 6 we switch to a song that is likely to suit folks that are a little more laid back and easy going. This offering from Canadian ensemble Arcade Fire trundles along nicely in a way that will really complement your driving progress. It won’t necessarily give you a chance to show off your vocal range, but it will allow you to get all deep and contemplative behind the wheel. Just make sure you don’t lose focus of what’s happening in the here and now!

5. Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee — Despacito

Now, before we lose all credibility, hear us out on this one. Your car is the perfect place to enjoy your guilty pleasure songs. From the outside it looks like you’re bopping away to the latest indie jam, when in reality you’re listening to a cheesy one-hit wonder for the 500th time. Despacito really fits the bill here. Do you understand the words? Not exactly. Will you attempt to sing them anyway? You betcha! Play it to your heart’s content and no one outside the car will be any the wiser.

4. The Proclaimers — I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)

We don’t need to spend much time explaining this one as it regularly steals a spot on lists of ultimate driving songs. The Proclaimers crafted an excellent tune that everyone from your best mate to your Nan will enjoy. Whack it on during a road trip and we guarantee that everyone will be singing along by the chorus. It’s particularly great to play from the comfort of your car, because those 500 miles will fly by a lot quicker!

3. Eagles — Hotel California

Sliding in at number 3 we have another classic that we just couldn’t leave off our list. Music has the power to take you to another place and, particularly when holed up in your car, this is a blessing. With this Eagles song, you might be navigating the roads of Wigan (no shade to our Wigan readers) but for a few blissful minutes, you’re transported to the sunny climes and stunning vistas of the California coast. Driving never felt so good!

2. Tones and I — Dance Monkey

This one may age fairly quickly, but we’ve decided to throw one in for the younger generation to highlight the fact that your car is also a great place to sample the latest tunes. As long as a song checks the boxes of ‘upbeat’, ‘catchy’ and ‘easy to sing along to’, you’re good to go! Dance Monkey has all these advantages and more. Seriously, it has the power to turn a rush hour queue into your own personal dance party. Enjoy in safe doses!

1. Queen — I Want to Break Free

And, finally, taking the number 1 spot we have another classic rock anthem that reminds us of the joy that is hitting the road. Driving is synonymous with freedom, and what better way to solidify that feeling than by letting Freddie and the boys narrate your ride. We all want to break free sometimes and, gosh darn it, sometimes putting foot to pedal is the closest you’re going to get! Pro tip: this one is best enjoyed with the windows down and the wind in your hair. Rock on!
